Summer 2019

Celebrating accomplishments is critical to creating an environment that nurtures continuing success for location professionals. We have accomplished a great deal in six short years of award shows. Voting has begun for our 2019 LMGI Awards, which stand for international excellence and diversity on location—reflecting our growing membership. If you build it, they will come … and so it is that the respect and recognition we continue to garner is growing. We all know it’s not about the individual—it’s about the team, our global tribe. So check your modesty at the door because when you shine, we all look good! In the end, it’s all about the work—the tireless creative contributions of the location team. We salute all the many (over 100) exceptional submissions—the Selection Subcommittee had a very difficult time narrowing down the finalists. Our nominees are an outstanding representation of quality location work—individuals and teams that symbolize the vital role locations play in telling a story.

“For me, honestly, it’s not about individual accomplishments, individual awards. It’s about what I’ve got to do and how I can contribute to the team.”
—SHERYL SWOOPES, THREE OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALS AND THREE-TIME WOMEN’S NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION MVP

In addition to announcing our impressive nominees, this issue features Quentin Tarantino’s most personal film yet—Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood as our cover story, with reporter Nancy Mills examining the extraordinary lengths it took a great location team to turn back time. A similar ethos is evident in S.W.A.T., with Shaun O’Banion taking a look at the intrepid location team that brings you one of the most popular shows on TV.

Other columns include Paul Messana’s profile of “Next Generation” Atlanta-based KALM Jen Farris. Veteran UK location manager and LMGI member Georgette Turner’s balancing act is the fulcrum of “Career Focus.” “In the News” spotlights our successful events in Vancouver, Atlanta, Montreal and New York, as well as a Fam Tour to South Korea. Additionally, congratulations are in order for the new LMGI Board of Directors, as well as to our friends and colleagues Todd Christensen, LMGI (the new director of the NM Film Commission) and Per-Henry Borch, winner of the 2019 Sell Norway Prize. Location pro Dow Griffith, LMGI closes the issue with a fabulous “Martini Shot” from his blue period, of Bora Bora, French Polynesia.

Articles and photography submissions are always encouraged. Your ideas, your stories … they are what keep us connected. Please let us know what you are up to at Compass@LocationManagers.org.

Always a pleasure, never too busy.
