ARTISAN ARTISAN-java ARTISAN-flan

Antigua Bread & Bakery combines the best of a java bar, Guatemalan cuisine, and the perfect scout stop. It offers a quiet place to work with fast, free wifi and access to power.

This Highland Park oasis has a great selection of quick bites influenced by Guatemalan cooking traditions. The cafe features breakfast and lunch menus of moderately priced food with a great dessert bar.

“The quiet atmosphere was a welcome relief from the noise of L.A,” says scout Rita Van Hausen. “I was looking for an east coast look (which older neighborhoods like Highland Park offer) when I found this gem of a coffee house. Instead of driving back across town to upload my photos,  I was able to upload at Antigua while enjoying a delicious flan and double espresso.”

Mayan Flan Recipe:

Ingredients:
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup water
4 beaten eggs
14 oz sweetened condensed milk
2 cups whole milk or water
1/2 t vanilla
1/2 cup sugar

Preheat oven to 350. Place 1 cup of sugar and water in a saucepan and stir to dissolve sugar. Place over medium heat and boil the sugar, without stirring until it turns a honey brown, around 15 minutes.

Remove the carmelized sugar from heat and pour into a 9″ cake pan. Place the cake pan in a baking pan.

Beat the eggs, condensed milk, whole milk or water, vanilla and half cup sugar until smooth. Pour into the cake pan.

Fill the baking pan with enough warm water to come about 2/3 up the sides of the baking pan.

Cook 45 minutes to an hour. Chill for an hour.
