Location Manager Terry has retired and moved to his dream home/retreat in Puerto Escondido, Mexico. He shares with us his journey.
In 2003, an old college roommate and I began searching for an area to build a place to retire to. A place where we could live well and have all our friends and family visit. We looked at the Yucatan, Belize, Guatemala, Panama, and Costa Rica. Then an old surfer friend told us about Puerto Escondido.
Puerto Escondido is an international surfing town. Waves are between 8-20 feet depending on the time of year. Surfers of all ages come year round to surf and compete in international tournaments. The mean temperature is 85 degrees and the water temp is around 80. Many surfers are buying and living in Puerto with their families and more arriving all the time.
The town population is around 50,000 with an expat population hovering between 6-7000. The restaurants are great and the mercado is one city block by one city block long. Wednesdays and Saturdays the farmers line up to sell their fresh-picked produce. There’s an 80 boat fishing fleet so the sea food is fresh everyday and out of this world. The sport fishing, off one of the ponga boats, is one of the best.
The first vacation home built consists of 2 apartments, each has 2 bedrooms + 1.5 ba (1,200 sf each) with unobstructed ocean views.
I just retired after 28 years as a location manager. I am packed up the dogs and 2 cars and moved to Puerto. If you come down and take a “real” vacation, I guarantee it will be relaxing.
