Jonathan \u201cJJ\u201d Hook may not have a magnifying glass, but every film he\u2019s worked on \u2014 roughly 40 and counting \u2014 he joins the director in scrutinizing every scene in every script and concludes to the best of his ability: Where should this be shot?<\/p>\n

For \u201cBumblebee,\u201d a spin-off of the Michael Bay franchise \u201cTransformer\u201d movies, plenty of it is in Vallejo. This week on Mare Island, count on evenings with helicopters, special effects and pyrotechnics, followed by two days of downtown action.<\/p>\n

The supervising location manager and co-producer oversees around 15 people on his team, though he\u2019s handled movies orchestrated as many as 50 others working simultaneously in numerous states and countries.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not a job for the timid, said Hook, a Los Angeles resident and native of England.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are dealing with change and pressure,\u201d he said. \u201cBut if you\u2019re creative and have a good imagination, you can climb the ranks quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hook started as a personal assistant in England doing a period piece that included a shipwreck.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy job was running out with blankets, tea and coffee,\u201d Hook said.<\/p>\n

Obviously, he did it well. Extremely well, by the looks of his resum\u00e9 that includes \u201cLove Actually, \u201cHarry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,\u201d \u201cThe Sopranos,\u201d \u201cMission Impossible III,\u201d \u201cSpider-Man 3,\u201d \u201cHancock,\u201d \u201cMen in Black III,\u201d \u201cInception,\u201d \u201cThor,\u201d \u201cTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,\u201d and all five \u201cTransformer\u201d films before the spin-off \u201cBumblebee.\u201d A sixth \u201cTransformer\u201d movie is set for 2019.<\/p>\n

As little job security as there can be in the industry, Hook\u2019s apparently nailed down the job on the \u201cTransformer\u201d set.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s funny. After every single movie, there is a bit of insecurity if the phone hasn\u2019t been ringing,\u201d Hook said. You\u2019re always worried, \u2018Will I ever work again?\u2019 Eventually, the phone rings. If people want the security of a 9 to 5, maybe this isn\u2019t quite for them.\u201d<\/p>\n

The appeal of location managing for Hook?<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been doing it so long, I\u2019ve kind of forgot,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s not being in one place for that long. My \u2018office\u2019 is always changing. One minute, I\u2019m in a desert. Another minute I\u2019m in Vallejo. Next week I can be in a redwood forest in Santa Cruz.\u201d<\/p>\n

Logistics alone can be a major challenge, said Hook, who also finds himself in charge of community outreach.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we leave, you\u2019re making sure everyone is happy and wants us back,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The \u201cBumblebee\u201d synopsis:<\/strong><\/p>\n

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junk yard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (played by Hailee Steinfeld) on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t difficult to create exactly what was needed in town here, Hook said.<\/p>\n

\u201cVallejo has got great bones,\u201d he said of the town\u2019s infrastructure. \u201cIt\u2019s an Anywhere America, Back-to-the-Future type vibe. The great thing about Vallejo is there aren\u2019t these huge chain stores. There a few other cities in California like it, but not that many. The city hasn\u2019t been turned into a strip mall.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mare Island\u2019s drydocks have been perfect for \u201cBumblebee,\u201d said Hook.<\/p>\n

So good, he noted, \u201cthe ending of the movie was re-written after finding the location.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cTransformer\u201d films allow the improvisation, he said. Not so with a movie like \u201cInception,\u201d where \u201cyou have a completely finished, polished script before you start and honor every word.\u201d<\/p>\n

Because Hook needs to be aware of scenes and sets and scripts, \u201cyou plan for the worst and hope for the best. That\u2019s probably the best rules to follow,\u201d he said. \u201cExpect to be let down or given bad information at some point. Have a plan to get out of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

And if a day\u2019s shoot is lost because of Hook\u2019s decision, \u201cthat\u2019s a big problem on my reputation,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of pressure to make sure every day is achieved.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sure, he said, sometimes you can\u2019t find the perfect site even after looking at 300 different locations.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome just don\u2019t work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Then there are times Hook finds a location, filming is done, then he\u2019ll find \u201ca better version after the fact and there\u2019s nothing you can do. That always gets to you if you care about your job. It\u2019s a bit of a bummer. You always feel disappointed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though not technically employed by Paramount Pictures, 90 percent of his work is with Paramount, the same company handling the filming for \u201c13 Reasons Why,\u201d which has filmed its first and second Netflix season in Vallejo.<\/p>\n

Pinpointing the right site becomes an art form. Or, in Hook\u2019s case, the ability at mastering Google searches.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe do find a lot through Google,\u201d he said. \u201cIt helps steer guys in the right direction.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hook credited the late Edward French with locating Mare Island for \u201cBumblebee.\u201d French, 71, was shot and killed in July in an apparent robbery at Twin Peaks in San Francisco.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis vision and his creativity brought us to Mare Island and Vallejo,\u201d said Hook.<\/p>\n

\u201cBumblebee\u201d directed by Travis Knight and produced by Transformers franchise veterans Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Bay, along with executive producers Steven Spielberg, Brian Goldner and Mark Vahradian. Chris Brigham is the executive produce. The screenplay is written by Christina Hodson.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
