\"\"Oscar-winning actress\u00a0Marlee Matlin,<\/strong> whose lifetime advocacy for the deaf and hearing impaired as exhibited in the highly acclaimed film Coda<\/em> on Apple TV+, will receive the esteemed Humanitarian Award from the Location Managers Guild International (LMGI) at the 8th<\/sup> Annual LMGI Awards themed \u201cCelebrate the Where.\u201d The\u00a02021 Awards\u00a0will honor the exemplary humanitarian commitment that Matlin has made to spotlight the deaf and hearing impaired throughout her award-winning career in the motion picture and television worlds. Actor\u00a0Isaiah\u00a0Mustafa\u00a0will host the online LMGI Awards ceremony\u00a0on Saturday, October 23, at\u00a02:00 p.m.\u00a0PDT (Pre-Show at 1:30 p.m.),\u00a0during a virtual ceremony. The awards celebration\u00a0will be free to stream, but registration is required<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

LMGI President John Rakich stated,\u00a0\u201cThe\u00a0LMGI proudly salutes Marlee Matlin for her dedication, talent and the impact that she has had on enlightening the world to the deaf and hearing-impaired community. Her powerful performances in both motion pictures and television demonstrates her understanding, compassion and support for this special group, and we honor her enthusiasm, commitment and amazing achievements as a true humanitarian and an artist.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matlin recently starred in the Sundance Film Festival darling Apple Original Film, Coda, <\/em>which follows a hearing teenage girl who is a child of deaf adults.\u00a0<\/em>The film won four Sundance awards, including the grand jury prize. Matlin received worldwide critical acclaim for her motion picture debut in\u00a0Children of a Lesser God<\/em>, a performance celebrated with the Academy Award\u00ae for Best Actress. At age 21, she became the youngest recipient of the Best Actress Oscar. Marlee is also an executive producer of the Oscar-nominated short film\u00a0Feeling Through<\/em>, the first film to feature a deaf blind actor in a leading role.<\/p>\n

In addition to her acclaimed film career, Matlin has received four Emmy\u00ae-nominations in her television projects\u00a0including her performances on\u00a0Seinfeld<\/em>,\u00a0Picket Fences,<\/em>\u00a0The Practice<\/em>and\u00a0Law and Order: Special Victims Unit<\/em>. Additional notable TV performances include\u00a0The West Wing, Bridge to Silence<\/em>, and\u00a0Reasonable Doubt.<\/em><\/p>\n

Marlee\u2019s talents extend to her writing as well, with her autobiography\u00a0I\u2019ll Scream Later\u00a0<\/em>becoming\u00a0a New York Times\u00a0Best Seller. Matlin also published a novel for children titled\u00a0Deaf Child Crossing<\/em>\u00a0which was loosely based on her own childhood. She later wrote and published a sequel titled\u00a0Nobody’s Perfect<\/em>, produced on stage at the\u00a0John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts\u00a0in partnership with\u00a0VSA Arts\u00a0in October 2007.<\/p>\n

Matlin has been instrumental in many activities that are aiding the deaf and hard of hearing communities. Thanks in part to her efforts, all Academy screeners have closed captions. She helped pass legislation that mandated ASL interpreters be present at all COVID-19 press conferences. She also organized a PSA on how to vote that included leaders in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community, aiding the millions of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Americans in accessing resources.<\/p>\n
