Bob Marley: One Love, is a biographical film based

Bob Marley: One Love, is a biographical film based on the life of reggae singer and songwriter Bob Marley (Kingsley Ben-Adir) the film follows Marley from his rise to fame in the mid-1970s up until his death in 1981. Location Manager and LMGI Member Asha Sharma and SLM Mark Grimwade gave us a behind the scenes look at what it was like to scout for the film.

“Bob Marley: One Love was an amazing project to work on on a number of levels. I’m a fan of Marley’s work. To have the opportunity to work on the project and collaborate with his family to help tell his story was a huge honor. As you can imagine there were a number of interesting facts you uncover when scouting on a project of this nature which blends historical fact and geography with the storytelling process. I spent a considerable amount of time researching Bob and what led him to come to London to escape the violence on the streets of Jamaica.

When I started on the project Chris Lowe (production designer) and I wanted to find and use as many of the original locations as possible and set about putting these ideas together on our initial scouts. We were keen on approaching the owners of the house he actually lived in on Oakley Street. This way we could recreate the morning run Bob and the Wailers would have taken over Albert Bridge to play football in Battersea Park just across the Thames from his house. As we broke down the script we scouted all the scripted historical locations to establish which ones still existed in usable form. Basing Street Recording Studio had been converted into flats, to match the architecture of what was formerly a chapel; we ended up using St Mary’s Church in Marylebone.

Aside from the UK Locations there were also a number of European venues, hotels and streets we needed to recreate. We settled on The Saville Club for the interior. The scene had Bob and Rita exiting from a rear stage-door onto a Parisian Street. We scouted a number of options for this and chose a street to the rear of the Savoy Hotel called Eating Lane, which gave us a grand scale.”

We caught up with LMGI member and Location Manager

We caught up with LMGI member and Location Manager Deborah Wakshull to talk about her work on Love Lies Bleeding, an electrifying love story from director Rose Glass. Here is what she had to share.

“From the beginning I was very excited about being part of Love Lies Bleeding. The script was so original; A 1980’s bodybuilding, lesbian, thriller love story! Who wouldn’t want to Location Manage that! It was a fun and challenging creative treasure hunt. The scripted locations were; a gym, a hero apartment and a mansion. We also needed a deep crack in the earth and a gun range we could take over for filming.

The mansion was found by our designer's partner jogging up a mountainside road. We were like ”you have got to be kidding!” Yeah it looked great but it was in a small housing community, up a narrow steep road on the side of the Sandia Mountains. There was no place for parking work trucks, crew or basecamp on site. We got a bit lucky with one small dirt lot behind the location as a house had just been torn down and there was an overgrown old tennis court. We took down fencing, graded the road and broke down cement curbing to accommodate. Our amazing transpo department made it work.

In NM we have many cracks in the earth. They are called arroyos. I think we scouted every possible crack that was in the filming zone. Nothing was deep enough. We ended up at a working Gypsum Mine and created what I call the pit of death. Working with Rose Glass and UK producers was really great.

The cast couldn’t have been kinder and more generous. The creative vision was complemented by a common collaboration by everyone working together to make the best film possible. In the end we made it through a very hot summer, all the gnats, all the dust and the demands that come with making any film. Our locations department was a diverse group of smart, hard-working professionals with great senses of humor, which is so important in our industry. I have to say that I am extremely lucky to have had such a team.”

We caught up with Location Manager and LMGI Member

We caught up with Location Manager and LMGI Member Harriet Lawrence to chat about her work on the film SALTBURN. Here is what Harriet had to say about Oxford and filming Saltburn in one of the most magical cities in England.

“Saltburn opens with a bustling scene of a new term at Oxford University set in one of the most iconic squares in Oxford. Bikes, students, luggage, parents dropping off. It was a complex single shot coming off a camera crane, moving to Steadicam following Oliver as he arrives and then enters the college through the old doors into the sunlit quad.

If you love architecture as much as I do, then filming in Oxford is an absolute joy. It’s not easy, working around the medieval streets, term dates and archaic rules but if you can do all of that, then you will be rewarded with ancient texture, gorgeous architectural details, immaculate lawns, cobbled streets and stone in every shot. You can feel the history seep into every scene.

Invariably we wanted to put lights and cranes in the middle of the most perfect manicured lawns, we wanted to buy out a punting business in the middle of the tourist season and stop the traffic on the main road into Oxford, but my team rose to the challenge, and we managed to give the creative team and the crew everything they wanted. Well almost; the police popped in to ask very nicely if we could perhaps use a little less atmos. The cars crossing the main bridge could hardly see where they were going.

After much prep, negotiations and planning, we had a wonderful week of split days filming Saltburn in Oxford just before the new term started. Coming from the bubble of filming for six weeks at the 900-year-old house which was our main location, it was great to be back in the thick of managing a shoot around the outside world and the hordes of tourists that Oxford inevitably attracts.”

When it was announced that a new Indiana Jones fil

When it was announced that a new Indiana Jones film would go into production, fans around the world rejoiced, but what if you get the call to Scout for such an iconic film? We caught up with the Location Manager and LMGI members Enrico Latella and Betta Tomasso to give us a rundown on what it was like for the Italian Location Department to work on Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and here is what they had to say.

When we got the call, “We toured (scouted) around the beautiful coasts of Sicily—Syracuse, Cefalù, Castellammare, the archeological sites of Segesta, Trapani, and Marsala. We thought we would benefit from the cool end of the summer breeze, but nothing prepared us for the tropical weather storms that followed us from location to location, earning the title of Indiana Jones Sicilian challenge 2021!

Location Manager Maurizio Licciardello initially scouted all historical locations to recreate ancient Greece and a timeless Sicily with the supervision of Location Manager Duncan Broadfoot.

The beautiful old town of Cefalù was the perfect location to stage a few days of filming. Once we managed to gain the trust and cooperation of the local administration and its residents we dressed balconies, doorways, shops, restaurants, courtyards, and even the facade of a building transforming the historical center into an open-air film set.

The ruins of the Tonnara del Secco (Trapani), once used by the local fisherman to carve tuna fish and nowadays abandoned - was another challenging location due to the fact that the area is situated inside a natural park and is also protected by the Superintendency. The process to secure the location from a health and safety prospective and to obtain all necessary permits has been lengthy and not without obstacles, especially since we had to convince the authorities that we wanted to stage a full Roman battle! But the final result (once the ships were added with a little help from (visual effects) made it all worthwhile."
